Diversity and the Failure of the University of Maryland November 4, 2009

As stated several times before, I go to the University of Maryland (College Park). It’s one of those universities hellbent on promoting diversity, going as far as to say something ridiculous such as “even our squirrels are black” on tours given to incoming freshmen.
This is, of course, completely contradictory to recent rumors that, because of budget issues, “diversity”-promoting programs/centers face elimination.
But, what exactly is diversity. Personally, I believe that, because we are all one race (human), it’s relatively asinine to band together with people just because you are classified as black or white or whatever “race” or “creed” (such primitive language) you have been assigned, or ascribed to. This is because, well, race is a social construct designed to prioritize one group of people while deeming others inferior. (If you want evidence, look it up; there’s enough to make your head spin) Race is the thing that allowed for the Ku Klux Klan, the Nazi Regime, and countless other atrocity-committing groups to exist and instill so much hatred and fear. Race is the thing that has gotten many a man murdered. And “race” is the same thing that is still dividing us.
We need unity, not division through “diversity.” We must respect other cultures and desire to learn of/about them, as knowledge is, indeed, power. However, we mustn’t divide ourselves into all of these subgroups just for the sake of being different. Remember that racism and ignorance are still alive, and we as a people perpetuate it when we allow ourselves to be grouped into labels such as “black,” “white,” “gay,” or “straight.” Some people who believe that they are fighting the problem, are the problem. Rather, they are playing into the problem and distributing this venom to the masses.
We are all human, every single one of us. The sooner that we accept that there is no absolute difference between myself and a person of a lighter shade (or darker) than I am, the sooner we will finally achieve peace, unity and acceptance. We must step out of the comfort zones that have been placed upon us and see that there is no true variation between a “black” man and an “Asian” woman, besides superficial things such as the hue of skin they possess, and that women possess ovaries, vaginas, can bear children and produce breast milk–but that’s not really here nor there for the sake of this argument. All of the archaic ideas that one “breed” of people are superior to another are just that: archaic and should be dealt with accordingly.
We are all citizens of the world, and we are all human. It is time for us all to realize this and move forth with this idea.
But, this is not the view of the majority. Therefore, it will be viewed as heretical, revolutionary, and ultimately dangerous.
However, this is not to say that Maryland is let off the proverbial hook for these possible happenings. As an institution of higher learning, it is their job to provide the best, most well-rounded education that they possibly can. By merging schools that have nothing to do with one another (besides the “diversity” banner), the purpose of higher education is compromised. If this happens, no longer should the university claim that it is a full-fledged institution of higher learning. No longer should Maryland promote that it is “diverse” and accommodates for all heritages. No longer can it even say that it offers a complete education. To say that would be a blatant lie.
We can spend millions of dollars on renovations for stadiums, yet may not be able to keep women’s studies as a separate entity and still have overcrowding, Oakland Hall be damned? I think someone should reevaluate our new slogan.
University of Maryland: Unstoppable Starts Here…unless you’re black, a woman, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, Asian, Hispanic, Latino (there is a difference), religious, atheist, white, part of a Fraternity/Sorority, part of any extracurricular activity (sports included), a male, an out-of-towner, or an in-state student.
It’s time’s like these that I thank God that I’m so close to graduation.
